What to expect
The initial consultation lasts up to 90 minutes during which time we will discuss your main complaint, overall health and receive treatment. Traditional Chinese Medicine is a holistic system that considers the influences of diet, lifestyle, stress and emotion on your health so we may also discuss these areas. I will then take your pulse and look at your tongue which are used diagnostically in Chinese Medicine.
Acupuncture points are located all over the body, however many of the common ones are found on the forearm and lower leg.
Subsequent treatments are approximately 1 hour.
How frequently do I have treatment?
The number and frequency of treatment varies according to the individual and is dependant upon a number of factors. However, I expect to see positive change in symptoms within 4 – 6 treatments. Appointments are initially weekly for most conditions. I will discuss your treatment plan with you at your initial consultation and may also suggest lifestyle and dietary advice.
Do the acupuncture needles hurt?
Acupuncture needles are very fine and should not cause any pain. Most people experience a dull ache or tingling sensation once the needles are in and then find it to be very relaxing.
Are there any side effects from treatment?
Most people feel very calm and relaxed after treatment and you may feel tired. It is advisable to take it easy and have a restful evening. There are very few side effects from acupuncture and any are usually mild and transient.
Please avoid caffeine or alcohol immediately before or after treatment.
Is acupuncture safe?
Acupuncture is a very safe and effective treatment. Single use, pre-sterilised needles are used for treatment and a strict code of safe practice is followed. Acupuncture is one of the safest medical treatments available. For more information please visit http://www.acupuncture.org.uk/acupuncture/safety-of-acupuncture.html
